The WCNC 2014 program will include full-day workshops on Sunday, April 6, 2014. The following workshops are open for paper submissions as described in the individual Call for Papers. Submissions for all workshops are due October 16, 2013. When submitting papers on EDAS, please take care to submit to the appropriate WCNC 2014 workshop. Scope: The ever-increasing need for higher data rates in multimedia services and applications leads to stringent requirements on the bit rate/km2 that next-generation cellular wireless networks are expected to deliver. This increasing trend has urged mobile operators to examine new ways for improving their coverage and boosting their network capacities. A promising approach to this challenge is the dense deployment of short range, low power and low-cost base stations or access points in conjunction with the macrocellular network, as well as relays, distributed antennas and radio remote heads. However, the CAPital and OPerating EXpenditures (CAPEX and OPEX) of such heterogeneous networks increase with the increasing number of nodes. The solution to this problem is the deployment of Self-Organizing NETworks (SONETs). SONETs represent a novel paradigm based on the deployment of networks with self-organized functionnalities. There are significant technical problems that need to be addressed for the successful deployment and operation of SONETs. In particular, time-, frequency- and spatial-domain interference management is a fundamental issue. To deal with increasing peak data demands, SONETs design should be self-organized based on interference/load/congestion levels, dynamically adapting their transmissions and using smart traffic offloading strategies onto licensed/unlicensed bands. The IEEE International Workshop on Self-Ogranizing NETworks (SONETs) will offer an excellent opportunity for academic and industrial researchers for spreading and sharing the latest results and understandings for rendering wireless networks more efficient in terms of capacity, coverage, Quality-of-Service performance and energy consumption.

W2. Interference and Design Issues for Future Heterogeneous Networks (HETNETs)

Scope: Nowadays, one can easily notice the process of systematic increase of the requirements for the wireless resources requested by the mobile users to wireless operators. Recently various approaches to that problem have been investigated, one of which assumes the introduction of the dedicated small-cells, where the considered small geographical area is served by low-range access points (or small base stations) creating a heterogeneous deployment where multiple small cell types coexist such as e.g. picocells, microcells, metrocells, femtocells, or WiFi zones. These deployments allow significant capacity enhancements and better coverage conditions that can be particularly beneficial for enhancing the bit rates of the users that are located at the edges of the macrocells. Such advanced topologies composed by multiple cell sizes and involving the combination of different radio access technologies are usually known as heterogeneous networks or simply as HetNets. Due to many attractive features, the HetNets concept has been considered by the standardization bodies as a promising technology for the next generation cellular networks. However, besides offering a plethora of benefits to both network operators and consumers, the practical deployment of HetNets still needs to face some critical issues and challenges such as the requirement of efficient interference coordination mechanisms to ensure that the mutual interference between different cells is kept below acceptable limits. This workshop aims to address various aspects of interference management and design issues in future heterogeneous networks.

W3. Device-to-Device and Public Safety Communications (WDPC)

Scope: Device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaid on wireless cellular networks is viewed as a key technology for providing seamless, high quality wireless access in next-generation wireless systems. The D2D concept is built around the idea of allowing the wireless devices to communicate with one another via direct D2D links over both the licensed and unlicensed spectrum. Unlike traditional short-range D2D technologies such as Bluetooth or Zigbee, D2D over cellular is expected to provide high capacity and guaranteed QoS over long ranges. D2D is also expected to lead to novel wireless applications such as proximity services and public safety communications. Indeed, D2D is seen as a key feature of 5G wireless systems. However, reaping the benefits of D2D requires handling several challenges such as interference management, self-organization, network discovery, and resource allocation, among others.  The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss technical challenges and recent results related to D2D and public safety communications. Topics of interest are diverse and include (but are not limited to): Resource allocation, neighbor discovery, energy efficiency, and multi-hop communications in D2D; Mobility, traffic, and channel modeling in D2D and public safety communication; Game theoretic D2D models; Interference management and localization in D2D; Experimental results on D2D performance in proximity services and public safety scenarios; Applications of D2D in public safety communications and adjunct domains.

W4. IoT Communications and Technologies

Scope: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel design paradigm, envisioned as a network of billions or trillions of machines communicating with one another and rapidly gaining global attention from academia, industry, and government. IoT is recognized as one of the most important areas of the future Internet; enabling ubiquitous computing among global networked machines and physical objects. Equipped with auto identification devices such a RFID tags in addition to sensors, actuators and machine-to-machine (M2M) devices, IoT has applications in a wide variety of areas such as smart grid, e-health, intelligent transportation, and logistics. The IEEE WCNC 2014 International Workshop on the Internet of Things Communications and Technologies follows the steps of the successful IEEE WiMob 2013 IoT workshop. It aims to provide a forum that brings together researchers from academia, practitioners from industry, standardization bodies, and government to meet and exchange ideas on recent research and future directions for the IoT. The technical discussion will be focused on the communications aspects and key enabling technologies for IoT, especially M2M communications and networking, RFID technology and Near Field Communications (NFC).

W5. Wireless Evolution Beyond 2020

Scope: With the rapid proliferation of advanced wireless communication technologies and services, wireless communications are now facing many emerging challenges, including prominently spectrum demand and network capacity limitations. There has been dramatic growth of subscriber base, and increasing dependence of world economy and society on wireless communications. The challenge of this workshop is to identify decisive requirements and user expectations, system concept paradigm shifts, key radio technology enablers, promising research directions and potential regulatory issues that will play an important role in shaping future Wireless Networks in the era beyond 2020.

The workshop is organised by the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF). WWRF’s goal is to encourage global research that will achieve unbounded communications to address key societal challenges for the future. The term “Wireless World” is used in a broad sense to address the support of innovation and business, social inclusion and infrastructural challenges. This will be achieved by creating a range of new technological capabilities from wide-area networks to short-range communications, machine-to-machine communications, sensor networks, wireless broadband access technologies and optical networking, along with increasing intelligence and virtualization in networks. This will support a dependable future Internet of people, knowledge and things and the development of a service universe.

Scope: This workshop explores novel concepts to allow for flexibly centralised radio access networks using cloud-processing based on open IT platforms, to allow for a high quality of experience for mobile access to cloud-processing resources and services, and to allow a future network evolution focused on energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In fact, all future innovative network solutions will be conceived and deployed with a long term perspective of sustainability, both in terms of energy consumption of mobile network (and related interoperability with terminals) and cost efficiency of the different deployment and management options. This requires new concepts for the design, operation, and optimization of radio access networks, backhaul networks, operation and management algorithms, and architectural elements, tightly integrating mobile networks and cloud-processing. This workshop will cover technologies across PHY, MAC, and network layer, it covers technologies which translate the cloud-paradigm to the radio access and backhaul network, and analyze all the network evolutions from the energy efficiency perspective. It will study the requirements, constraints, and implications for mobile communication networks, and also potential relationship with the offered service, both, from an academic and industrial point of view.
